WINTER DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME

Our current winter daylight saving time practise is outdated and needs to be emended.
Project 7-16 is making an attempt to correct this by educating the public about winter D.S.T., what it is, why we should adopt it, and what we can do about bringing it about. You are asked to read the following information, make suggestions, sign the petition, and help to correct this shit-u-ation. Please do not confuse regular D.S.T. with winter D.S.T.

Daylight Saving Time

The main purpose of Daylight Saving Time (called "Summer Time" in many places in the world) is to make better use of daylight. We change our clocks during the summer months to move an hour of daylight from the morning to the evening.

Winter Daylight Saving Time

I propose a new standard - Winter Daylight Savings Time (W.D.S.T.) - to move useable daylight later into the evening. Imagine the sun setting closer to 7:30pm - 8:00pm in the winter months instead of the current 5:30pm standard.

  • Why this new concept is needed

It is quite inefficent and somewhat useless to be in darkness in the afternoon and early evenings for most of the cooler months. Most people dont get home from work until after 6pm, and it will be dark before 6pm from late October till early March. If there were a W.D.S.T. and it was adjusted so that the sun did not set until a more usefull time (somewhere between 7pm - 8pm), then we could do so much more in our day. We spend aprox 5 whole months in the dark, you wake up in the dark to go to work/school, and are in a building virtually the whole time the sun is shining outside, then after the sun goes down you get out of work and drive home in the dark, shovel snow in the dark, children playing in the snow in the dark, walk your dog in the dark, everything in the dark. When do we get to see sunlight and spend time out in it? If you are lucky you can do that on Saturday and Sunday. Many people work Saturdays so it leaves them with only Sunday. Whoopty doo, Sundays for so many, is used to do chores since this is the only time of the week when sunlight is available to the workers/students, what a waste.

Now if W.D.S.T. was adopted, the sun would not set until (preferably) 8pm. This would not start in late October and end in early March, instead, we would switch our clocks in late August and again in late April giving us almost 8 months of early evening sunlight. Yes it would take longer in the day for the sun to come up (almost noon) but we already hardly do anything with our mornings that require sunlight. This later in the day sunlight would then be much more useable than it is currently. In early September you could come home after work/school and cut the grass, instead of leaving it till the weekend (when you could be doing something more productive/enjoyable). Having a later in the day sunset would make it much safer, you would be less likely to drive home in the dark so it is easyer to see (especially for those with compromised eyesight), children would be more visible and for longer periods and could get much needed excercise so badly needed by our youth today, we would have less depression/ seasonal affective disorders, as well as so many other positive health benifits that this would bring, less lighting would be required in sports feilds, and the benifits go on and on.

    Energy Conservation

We already run house light in the morning due to the darkness when we are preparing to go to work/school, so there would be no difference with the new proposed way. When we get home from work/school we need to run house lights again due to the early darkness. With the new W.D.S.T. we would not have to put the lights on right away
